History

The beginning

The Mountain Spirit mountaineering school was founded in 1997 by Dirk Groeger and Chris Semmel. Before that, they both worked for several years as mountain guides and ski instructors for various tour operators and as instructors in alpine associations. After gaining extensive experience, the time had come to put their own ideas into practice. In the first year the mountain school program consisted mainly of tours and climbing courses in the alpine region. Between 1999 and 2002 freeride and ski tours to Canada, Kyrgyzstan, India and Turkey followed. A highlight in 2001 was the first expedition with touring skis on the 7,546 m high Muztagh Ata. At least as exciting as the ascent of the mountain was the crossing of the border from Kyrgyzstan to China via the newly opened border crossing at the Torugardt Pass.

2000 - 2010

In 2000 Mountain Spirit took over one of Munich's largest ski schools and became a mountain and ski school. Meanwhile the ski school runs under the name "Skischule München" and has its own internet presence, but has remained a part of Mountain Spirit.
In 2002 Chris Semmel left Mountain Spirit and took over the position at the DAV from Pit Schubert as head of the safety committee. Since then, Dirk Groeger has been the sole owner of the mountain and ski school.

In winter 2002/03 some of the most popular freeride programs started. Heliskiing in Courmayeur, Gressoney and Val Grisenche was a special highlight at the beginning of the new millennium. A few years later, in 2007, the ski tour programme in Scandinavia began with a pilot tour to Lofoten. Further trips with touring skis led to Turkey, Iran, Russia, India and Chile. The program became more extensive every year and the focus of the mountain school shifted from the summer to the winter season.

2010 until today

With the beginning of the new decade, ski tours became more and more popular and new, exotic destinations were added. Something special were the still relatively unknown valleys in the Maritime Alps and of course the tours in the far north. Due to the increasing number of ski touring beginners, the number of off-piste ski courses and safety training courses also increased. These courses now take place every weekend throughout the winter. In order to meet the demand for instructors for the deep snow courses, a special deep snow and freeride team of mountain guides and ski instructors was set up in 2015, which is dedicated to this task with great competence and commitment.

The Mountain Spirit Team

The Mountain Spirit team consists of mountain guides and ski instructors, many of whom have very long professional experience and contribute this to the mountain school and the program. All travel and tour procedures are based on our own experience and are a reason for the high quality of our events. Trips and tours organized for the first time are marked as pilot tours.

The base camp of Mountain Spirit is located in Murnau am Staffelsee and visitors are always welcome for a cup of coffee.
